In
contrast to other DSL providers who oversell available capacity so that
they can deeply discount price, CrossLink offers robust DSL performance
because CrossLink does not over sell capacity.
DSL
Availability - DSL only works within about 2.5 miles from a phone company
facility with DSL equipment. DSL cannot work on lines that have a digital
loop carrier or that have too many load coils (a device to extend the range
of a voice signal) or bridge taps (when you are spliced into the middle
of an existing copper line rather than having your own copper pair). These
devices pick up noise that interfere with the DSL signal. Verizon will
not remove these devices from a phone line because Verizon does not generate
enough revenue over the life of a DSL circuit to recover the cost of conditioning
the line so that DSL will work. If a service location is served by fiber
optic cable then the only DSL service which may be available is 128K IDSL.
If a service location does not qualify for DSL service then other faster
than dial-up services may be available including 128K ISDN, fractional
and full T1 data circuits, or multi-channel bonded analog access.
DSL
Cost - DSL is a cost-effective alternative to a Frame Relay and direct
Point-to-Point data circuits. DSL uses lower cost DSL circuits which
are provided by Verizon only as a best effort service with no guarantee
of availability, bandwidth or the time required to effectively repair the
circuits should they ever go down. While the vast majority of DSL
subscribers experience very few, if any, outages or problems we at CrossLink
feel you must understand the level of service Verizon provided for the
copper wire that runs from the Verizon equipment facility to your location.
Because DSL is a best effort service, the cost is significantly lower than
higher quality business services like Point-to-Point and Frame Relay data
circuits for which Verizon offers a premium repair service should there
every be a problem. For businesses that have mission critical applications
CrossLink strongly recommends a Frame Relay (FR) or Point-to-Point (PTP)
data circuit.
