Shared
Internet Server(s)
The majority
of business web sites are small and hosted on shared web servers with the
web sites of many other businesses, organizations and individuals. This
is the most cost-effective solution for most businesses. Click
here for infromation on web site hosting plans.
Dedicated
Internet Server(s)
Some businesses
and organizations have special requirements that make it necessary to host
their web site on a dedicated server that is only used for their Internet
site. A dedicated server is preferred when the web site being hosted .
. .
-
is very large
and uses most of the resources of a single server or requires multiple
servers working together,
-
generates a
high volume of Internet traffic,
-
requires a large
database to collect and/or display information,
-
requires a higher
level of security not found or offered on shared web servers,
-
requires redundant
storage of information,
-
contains data
that requires special handling,
-
requires special
backup processing.
Dedicated
Server Location Options
A dedicated
server can be installed in . . .
-
the customer's
offices (requires a data circuit to the Internet backbone)
-
the offices of
an Internet Service Provider (requires a data circuit to the Internet backbone),
-
a dedicated
Colocation Center on the Internet backbone that connects regional Internet
aggregation points like the one in McLean/Vienna VA.
Servers
At Your Location - Installation of one or more servers at your
location requires a staff to support the server(s) operation and one or
more high capacity data circuits to connect to the Internet. It is
more cost effective to install web servers in CrossLink's Colocation Center
on the Internet backbone in McLean, Virginia. Some businesses install
Internet server(s) in their offices and share Internet bandwidth with users
on their office network who use their Internet connection for surfing,
Email and VOIP Internet telephone service. If the total demand for bandwidth
exceeds capacity then web server, Internet access and telephone over Internet
performance suffers.
Servers
In Your Internet Provider's Offices - Installation of one or
more servers in a local Internet Providers Offices is usually more cost
effective than paying for one or more data circuits. The Internet
Provider combines all bandwidth required by the colocated servers with
all other bandwith required by other customer's colocated servers, web
sites, Internet access and E-mail requirements. If the total demand for
bandwidth exceeds capacity then the performance of the colocated servers
will suffer.
Servers
In A Dedicated Colocation Center - A dedicated facility on the
Internet backbone offers the most direct and fastest route for Internet
site visitors. A growing number of businesses with Internet sites have
been moving away from hosting their Internet server(s) in their own offices
or in the offices of an Internet Service Provider because colocation in
the CrossLink Colocation Center on the Internet backbone . . .
-
is more cost-effective,
-
includes static
IP addresses as required,
-
offers greater
bandwidth directly into and from the Internet,
-
provides much faster
access (fewer hops) to the customer's Internet server(s),
-
includes around-the-clock
direct telephone access to our Network Operations Center staff,
-
offers secure facility
access,
-
includes continuous
Colocation Center monitoring 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including weekends
and holidays,
-
protects the customer's
investment in their Internet server(s) with a climate controlled environment
and conditioned electric power,
-
features battery
back-up and a backup generator should there ever be a power failure,
-
offers a configuration
area for server upgrades, maintenance and testing,
-
is a carrier neutral
colocation facility.
In addition to
these standard features CrossLink can provide additional optional services
to meet your specific requirements including server configuration, backup
and support services.
Dedicated
Server Type Options
A dedicated
server can be either a
-
dedicated server
used to only host one customer's web site(s)
-
virtual server,
which is a powerful computer, with the access rights and security of a
dedicated server, but which is shared by the owners of web sites that require
a server of their own Click
